Hapy was the god of inunudation, the flooding of the Nile. He was sometimes featured as a woman to symbolize fertility or a man with a pot belly to symbolize abundance. When the Nile flooded it deposited a layer of rich soil which the Egyptians relied on for a bountiful harvest. When the Nile rose too high and destroyed the land, or failed to rise at all, it was believed that Hapy was angry with the mortals.
